Rennes and its seigneurs - The Hautpoul family

The house of Hautpoul-Aussillon was one of the most distinguished within the Languedoc upper nobility. It took its name from Alto Pullo (‘high perch’), a fortified settlement south of Mazamet (Tarn) that was established by the Visigoths in c. 413. The Hautpoul-Rennes branch was born in 1422 with the marriage of Pierre-Raymond d’Hautpoul to Blanche de Marquefave, a descendant of the Voisins family.

The Hautpoul château Its complex consists of four main buildings laid out around a central courtyard of honour, whose corners are marked by three square towers and one round tower.

Did you know…? Hautpoul was a fortified settlement south of Mazamet (Tarn), founded by the Visigoths in the 5th century and besieged by Simon de Montfort in 1212.
