Section II - The life of Father Bérenger Saunière

An eventful start

Bérenger Saunière arrived in Rennes-le-Château in the summer of 1885. He rapidly drew attention to himself with his inflammatory sermons and was suspended from his duties even before the end of the year. It would be several months before he returned to the village in the summer of 1886.

A divided France When Father Saunière arrived in Rennes, the Catholic Church, opposed to many Republican principles, aligned itself largely with the Royalist cause.

Did you know…? In 1886 the Countess of Chambord, a prominent Royalist, gave Saunière some money following his problems with the Ministry of Public Worship.
